The Mirena IUD was approved by the FDA in 2003. Once inserted, the device releases hormones that cause of thickening of the uterine wall to stop the migration of sperm and is 99% effective at reducing the chance of pregnancy. When pregnancies do occur, they are usually ectopic pregnancies which may rupture the fallopian tubes and be potentially fatal. If you believe you may be a victim of a faulty medical device, Tomes & Hanratty, P.C. can represent you in your claim.

Device malfunctions

There are a number of different potential malfunctions that the Mirena IUD can have. One of those malfunctions is the migration of the Mirena IUD. The IUD travels and penetrates the uterine wall causing bleeding, which can lead to death. At times, it can also move into the abdominal cavity causing injury to the liver, spleen, as well as their intestine, spine and rib cage. Many women have had to have the IUDs surgically removed. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is another side effect of Mirena IUDs. PID is a severe infection of the entire reproductive system, and if not diagnosed early enough can lead to permanent infertility.
