The popular municipalities amongst locals and tourists alike of Wildwood and North Wildwood, New Jersey have proposed legislation that would ban all smoking on the boardwalk. The cigarette bans would begin on January 1, 2018, if passed, in an attempt to clean up the boardwalk and attract more families for summer months for the years to come.

If a person were to be found smoking a cigarette on the 38 blocks of boardwalk that go through these towns, they will face fines or jail time, depending on the municipality. For those in North Wildwood who are caught smoking on the boardwalk, they may face a fine of up to $250. The penalties in Wildwood are more serious, and may even result in jail time. If a person is caught with a cigarette on the boardwalk in Wildwood, they may face a fine of up to $1,000 or they may spend up to 90 days in jail.

North Wildwood’s vote on the smoking ban is going to be held after June 7, while Wildwood’s anti-smoking vote took place on May 24. This isn’t the first time a smoking ban in the area has been considered. In fact, Governor Christie vetoed a bill to prohibit smoking on all beaches but then approved a ban that would prohibit smoking at New Jersey state beaches and parks in July 2016.

It will be interesting to see what the Wildwoods decide as the summer beach season heats up. Our firm is committed to monitoring changes in local legislation that may affect you.
